If it helps you make sense of a new artist by the company she keeps, sit down with Among the Gold, Cheyenne Marie Mize's EP of duets with Bonnie "Prince" Billy on unearthed parlor tunes. The straightforward arrangements bring out the best in both of them, and Mize more than holds her own. But if you really want to get to know the Louisville singer-songwriter, you'll have to immerse yourself in Before Lately (sonaBlast!), her solo debut. She plays just about everything — guitar, piano, fiddle, banjo and more — at a languid pace, and her warm, twangless voice draws you into slow burners like "With(out)" and "Rest," which could sound plodding in less capable hands. Mize evokes nighttime in America and makes you feel there's no better place to be.
