Wu Man is the best-known player of the pipa (aka, Chinese lute) in the world. Tan Dun, Academy Award winner for his score to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon , is surely the marquee Chinese composer of our day. So the chance to hear Man play two of Dun's works — including the Concerto for Pipa and Strings — is a strong draw for this concert. But tucked in with the glitz is the music of two excellent local composers whose music has far greater substance and depth than Dun's, namely, Jay Reise and Jennifer Barker, with music inspired by Peruvian and Scottish traditions, respectively.
