Was Charlie Hunter one of the victims of the country's current financial miseries? The title of his last CD, Gentlemen, I Neglected to Inform You You Will Not Be Getting Paid, seemed at the time to be merely a humorous shrug at the travails of life on the road. But his latest, Public Domain (reapandsow), forefronts the royalty-free qualities of his repertoire rather than the musical ones. Not that those are lacking; taking a page from Rosanne Cash's book, the eight-string guitar wizard drew his selections from a list of a hundred classics drawn up by his grandfather, and offers a characteristically groove-oriented solo take on such chestnuts as "Ain't We Got Fun" and "Danny Boy."
