"The threat of violence is a daily fact that I live with as a transgender person," says up-and-coming fabric artist Wolfie E. Rawk. "Using fabric as a medium allows me to visually re-create this, by tearing the clothes and ultimately creating a new image based in healing and mending." To construct the pieces for his first solo show, he used scraps of clothing acquired from thrift stores, the street, friends and his closet — anything that can tell a story. "It's really important to me that the clothing has a history with a body. [I'm] drawn to little surprises that show a relationship between the fabric and the body, like burn marks and little stains."
