Local beekeeper John Shump is totally bummed about Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), an epidemic that's zonking 30 to 70 percent of beehives across the country. In his Penn State Cooperative Extension "Second Saturday" gardening series lecture this week, Shump'll address the issue, and talk about what bees are really up to. "Humans have been interacting with them for thousands of years," he says. "And yet we're still just scratching the surface of truly understanding how they work." He hopes people will walk away with a clearer understanding of how bees contribute to society, and maybe even decide to host a hive of their own.
