Twenty years later, the influence of the M-Base collective, then looked at as an insular, eccentric group, has seeped into the modern-jazz vanguard, its idiosyncratic blend of free jazz, funk and Ornette-inflected angularity having become one of the pillars of the music's leading-edge sound. Greg Osby has never stopped having a direct influence, however, constantly keeping an ear out for fresh new talent like pianist Jason Moran, who played with the saxophonist throughout the '90s. He's recently supplemented those efforts with the founding of Inner Circle Music, which releases new music by some of the same up-and-coming talent he employs, including members of the sextet he'll bring to town.
