[ soul/blues/rock ]
Predating the current soul resurgence by a good half-decade or so, this North Florida funky bunch have hardly changed a lick of their gritty, grooving ways since their near-classic 2001 debut, Blackwater . As white-boy soulsters go, Mofro stand apart from the Mayer Hawthornes and Eli Reeds of the world: Their swampy soul stew is more motley and meaty, simmered in Southern rock and blues as well as Stax/Volt and Muscle Shoals, and, critically, it's never felt the least bit backwards-looking. Their latest, Georgia Warhorse (Alligator) — the title track's a struttin' ecological blues as sung by a tenacious grasshopper — has guest spots from Toots Hibbert and Derek Trucks, but Grey and co. can get down just fine on their own.
