The main dramatic elements of the very first operas, by Monteverdi, were sex, violence and humiliation. Some things have not changed in 400 years. Composer Margaret Garwood would naturally include these devices in a setting of Hawthorne's classic tale of Puritan Boston The Scarlet Letter . Her new work, written in an unabashedly lush, neo-Romantic style, has its world première this weekend, with Richard Raub conducting the fabulous students of Academy of Vocal Arts, plus one alum, baritone John Packard. AVA veteran Dorothy Danner will direct.
