When a band releases an eponymous album this deep into its career, what's it mean? They've run out of ideas? They've perfected their sound? They realize that the long-player format is arbitrary and that all their music is just an extension of themselves so why bugger about with such nomenclaturely contrivances? Bardo Pond, the Philly psych-sonic expansionists' eighth studio album and first for Fire Records, smacks of that creating-on-the-razor's-edge quality. Maybe it was playing the Sydney Opera House with Marc Ribot this summer at the request of Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson (hear it here: ow.ly/3dKzc). Maybe it was getting chosen for the Godspeed You! Black Emperor-curated All Tomorrow's Parties Nightmare Before Christmas festival in the U.K. (Dec. 3-5; they'll play a warm-up in London with New Zealand's Dead C Dec. 1). But before they go global, they treat the hometown fans to a super-intimate nightmare before Thanksgiving.
