The position of Official Historian of East Coast Department Stores is no longer available, now that author Michael Lisicky has followed up Hutzler's: Where Baltimore Shops with Wanamaker's: Meet Me at the Eagle (History Press). We're talking about a niche market, to be sure. Still, a book that takes such pleasure in researching John Wanamaker's beloved retail chain — including all manner of anecdotes and illustrations dating back 150 years — will certainly earn some interest in this area. For instance: According to legend, my parents met for the first time at the mighty eagle statue at the Moorestown Mall. Lisicky's Camden-born, but he lives in Baltimore (where he plays oboe with their symphony orchestra), so he'll be here for a post-Thanksgiving parade from one local bookstore to another.
