Neighborhood Bike Works proves scrappy gears and busted wheels can indeed be turned into treasure. Local artists have scrounged the Works' shop collection for parts deemed unfit for riding and turned them into affordable works of art to be auctioned. In the past, most pieces sold for $100 or less, with cheaper items like spoke cards and T-shirts hovering in the $10 range. "[It's] a great way to support local arts and artists and to participate in reuse of bike parts and art material," says coordinator Olivia Haas, who says proceeds benefit urban youth-oriented programs like Ride of Dreams, a round-trip riding trek from Philly to Harrisburg.
