An avant-gardist with impeccable credentials who has still managed to remain lesser-known than many of his peers, bassist Mario Pavone increased his output dramatically over the last decade, releasing a series of stunning discs leading up to his 70th birthday last month. Since emerging on the 1970s loft scene, Pavone spent many years as an integral part of trios led by iconoclasts Paul Bley, Bill Dixon and Thomas Chapin. His latest work as a leader, which he'll present here, is "Arc Suite T/Pi T/Po," featuring tenors Tony Malaby and Marty Ehrlich, trumpeter Dave Ballou, pianist Peter Madsen and drummer Gerald Cleaver. Pavone employs the all-star sextet in a dense piece of interwoven lines and textures, a quilt of powerful sound.
