[ holiday radio marathon ]
My pal Jon Solomon's gotta be the second most-beloved Christmas Jew of all time. Every Christmas Eve at 6 p.m., he signs on to WPRB (Princeton's radio station) and just starts playing holiday music. And doesn't stop. Until 6 p.m. Christmas day. This year's show will be his 22nd such marathon, so his collection has grown way beyond "Silver Bells" and "Silent Night." When I asked him to name some favorites he was looking forward to dusting off this year, he balked. Balked! "With 1.8 days of high-quality digital files on my computer in addition to the LPs, CDs and 45s, I don't know how to even start with a question like this." He was able to throw together a list of new acquisitions he's looking forward to spinning: Comedy Death Ray Xmas CD 2010, "David Christmas" by Fucked Up, Santastic V: Snow, Man! mash-up collection, A Very Special Mothguts Christmas, Superchunk's "Child's Christmas In Wales" and Winechuggers' "Face Down at Christmas Again." Could one of these contain a brand-new timeless holiday classic? Yep. The one by Mothguts.
