A Philly emo renaissance in 2011, who'da thunk it? For the folks who never put away their Cap'n Jazz and Get Up Kids records, this new generation of like-minded area artists — Algernon Cadwallader, By Surprise, Kill You in the Face, Snowing — has taken the torch and run, approaching critical mass over the past few years. Of the bunch, peppy four-piece Everyone Everywhere could be the most polished. Which, to be fair, we're talking about a style where sloppiness often equals greatness. But the band wears its sharpness and skill well on last year's self-titled full length, and 2009's A Lot of Weird People Standing Around EP. Bright brittle basslines fly at warp speed, carrying interlocking guitar parts. Conversational lyrics ponder poorly heated houses and semesters abroad. Vocals are neither too whiny nor too faux-macho. They're not exactly Tim Kinsella losing his shit, but Everyone Everywhere has a winning blend.
