It feels like the room is empty, and Scott Pryor is whispering in your ear. The Philly singer-songwriter's 2009 release, Theater for the Weary, is alive with unforced, unpretentious intimacy. Cavernous drums thump in the background, piano flourishes tuck in around the fringe, but the core is Pryor, his guitar, and his voice, warm and understated in a Josh Rouse-esque way. Transplanted in the mid-aughts from his home in Virginia, Pryor wasted no time in falling in with the players in Philly's thriving folk scene. His band, the Common Sinners, features versatile guitarist Ross Bellenoit, bassist Todd Erk and expat Devin Greenwood, who produced Theater. Catch them for a Folksong Society concert at Yards Brewery this Sunday, and hear some tunes from the five-song EP Pryor plans to release this spring.
