Donny McCaslin The saxophonist has been churning out a steady progression of top-notch efforts lately, and this all-star quartet is not likely to break that streak. Eric Alexander Quartet The mainstream tenor torchbearer leads a quartet anchored by mentor and frequent collaborator Harold Mabern. Feb. 11-12, Chris' Jazz Café.

Rhys Chatham Brass Trio Much of experimental composer Chatham's work has been focused on the guitar, often in epic manifestations, but he's been playing electronically altered trumpet for more than 25 years. Ben Monder A guitarist with a strong, knife-edged original voice, Monder is a frequent collaborator with forward-thinkers from Maria Schneider to Theo Bleckmann to Paul Motian. Feb. 18, Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2600 Ben Franklin Parkway, 215-763-8100, philamuseum.org.

Francisco Mela The Cuban-born drummer has become one of the most explosive presences on the scene over the past few years, and will lead a stellar Afro-Cuban jazz sextet. Feb. 19, Painted Bride Art Center, 230 Vine St., 215-925-9914, paintedbride.org.

Celestial Septet The commingling of two outstanding ensembles: the Rova Saxophone Quartet and the Nels Cline Singers (featuring new bassist Trevor Dunn). Feb. 22, International House.

Christian McBride The in-demand Philly-born bassist presents a new suite for jazz ensemble and gospel choir paying tribute to icons of the civil rights movement. Feb. 26, Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, 3680 Walnut St., 215-898-3900, annenbergcenter.org.

Marc Copland Quartet A captivating pianist with a contemplative touch; the quartet will feature trumpeter Tim Hagans. Feb. 26, Chris' Jazz Café.

Captain Black Big Band Orrin Evans' raucous big band celebrates the release of its debut CD at its birthplace. March 4, Chris' Jazz Café.

Rez Abbasi The Pakistani-born guitarist's versatility takes him from music inspired by his homeland to the idiosyncratically lush sound of his recent Natural Selection. March 5, Painted Bride.

Composer Portrait: Fieldwork A three-night series presenting the collective and individual work of the inventive trio Fieldwork, comprised of three of modern jazz's most advanced conceptualists: saxophonist Steve Lehman, pianist Vijay Iyer and drummer Tyshawn Sorey.
