One of the most sophisticated goofball records you'll hear, Band Name's debut full-length, Breakfast (Soft City), is a rich digest of garage rock hooks and punk energy. Bassist Cat Park's lead vocals swagger on "Walls," a badass tune with a "Sonic Reducer" rumble. Singer-guitarist Jeremy Jams conjures Costello on "Flathead" and Weller on "Excitable Boy," and across the record we hear drummer Greg Labold subscribing to the old-school ethos of minimum kit/maximum sound. A formidable follow-up to their debut cassette single "Insert Hear," the record — like its accompanying art, not to mention Band Name's live show — is bright, silly and playful. But the band's exceptional skill is at a whole other level.
