Julia Rainer will haunt you. With an air of mystery and transience, the South Philly singer-guitarist's songs evoke the roaring ghost-folk of 16 Horsepower ("Insomnia"), the androgynous duets of Antony ("Spinning the Wheel") and the brittle soul of PJ Harvey ("Living in the Dark"). But there's breathtaking beauty amid the disquiet, like a warm voice on a midwinter night. Beat the cold with Rainer and her band the Shiners at the North Star tonight, and don't worry about the evening being overly glum: The Nashville bounce of North Lawrence Midnight Singers will get the blood flowing aplenty.
Thu., Jan. 20, 8 p.m., $8, with North Lawrence Midnight Singers, Spirit and Dust, and Satellite Hearts, North Star Bar, 2639 Poplar St., 215-787-0488, northstarbar.com.
