A perverse creature in more ways than one, Matthew Dear has skirted the elusive line between abstruse avant-pop auteur and down-to-business dancefloor maven for a while now. But he led us down his most deviant, inscrutable rabbit hole yet on last year's Black City (Ghostly), whose intermittent, tremulous glimmers of melodic uplift were all but smothered in a seething tangle of brittle, creaky, slithering, grinding beats, tonelessly croaked vocals and a cyber-Gothic textural palette ranging from gunmetal to sludge.
