Even people who know next to nothing about dance consider Alvin Ailey a household name. The choreographer's 53-year-old company is practically an American treasure, not only for its forthright celebration of black culture, but also because it's defined its own style, blending gorgeous technique with Broadway-inspired theatricality. If subtle nuance is what you expect of modern dance, leave your preconceptions at the door: Ailey's performances at the Kimmel this weekend present heartfelt, soulful new work as well as the company's signature crowd-pleaser, Revelations. Revel in it.
Sat., Feb. 26, 2 and 8 p.m.; Sun., Feb. 27, 2 p.m., $26-$72, Kimmel Center, 300 S. Broad St., 215-893-1999, kimmelcenter.org.
