Devil's Den
1148 S. 11th St.
215-339-0855Bar/Pub, South Philadelphia
Devil's Den is a place for the true suds lover. With 16 or so brews on tap and between 150 and 200 bottles in the cold case, there's a strong focus on both European imports (many of which have never been seen in Philly) and local craft brews. (Better yet, they're cycled out regularly to make room for new choices.) Head chef Allen Dann offers a slew of fair-priced plates, in many ways improved after initial menu foundering. A chilled cucumber soup with diced avocado offsets its hint of creaminess with just the right kick of spice. Seared scallops are served with a buttery sauce infused with vanilla rum for extra depth. A special of butterfish comes atop a mound of wheatberries studded with orange segments and asparagus spears. While the desserts still need a little work, it's clear that the kitchen now stands on par with the superb beer offerings. Open daily, 11 a.m.-2 a.m.; brunch served Sat.-Sun., 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
