Hamifgash

811-813 Sansom St.
215-925-3550

Middle Eastern, Center City East

Mother and son team Esther and Shai Cohen’s eatery Hamifgash (Hebrew for “meeting place”) is certainly diverse — described as kosher, Israeli, Turkish and vegetarian, it seems to have all the bases covered. Although the set-up inside is seemingly designed for a quick, no-nonsense meal, the droves of people lined up here on any given weekday prove that there’s more to this restaurant than meets the eye. The falafel itself is a treasure: flattened mounds of parsley-flecked chickpeas perfectly crisped and served with a velvety tahini sauce. The menu is packed with traditional Israeli fare like shawarma, lentil soup, and kebab, with Mediterranean touches like baklava and lahmacun (Turkish pizza with ground meat and chopped vegetables). Prices are affordable — lunch specials include an entrée and soup for $9.50, and the $9.95 salad platter, complete with scoops of silky hummus, creamy babaganoush, and charred eggplant salad is a feast on its own. Open Sun.-Thu., 10 a.m.- 9 p.m.; Fri., 10 a.m.-3 p.m.; closed Sat.

A friend and I dropped by for lunch today. The restaurant itself was bright an inviting. But we stood there for ~ 7 minutes hoping someone would acknowledge us. Then after receiving menus, we waited another 10 minutes and walked out.

I was a little puzzled by the lack of service.

I have to disagree, we had excellent service and food when we went for lunch the other day. The chicken scwarma I had was good, but my friend's lamb platter was excellent. Also, service was friendly and timely. Not sure what happened to KJ, but would recommend giving it another shot if you're still curious.

Just got a couple of Chicken Kabobs on Pita and an order of falafel balls to take out for my gf and I. The chicken kabobs were very good tasting, but they could have been filled a little fuller. I took a few too many bites of just pita. The falafel balls were good, but not as good as Mamas. Overall, a welcome addittion to the neighborhood. I will try other menu items.

KJ just suffered a cultural jolt. Israelis don't wait, they get in your face.

We love it! We go every week. The Chicken Kabob platter and the hamifgash platter are awesome. The humus is best in town
