Distrito

The Hub
3945 Chestnut St.
215-222-1657

Mexican/Southwest, West Philadelphia/University City

Entering Distrito for the first time can be as dizzying and exhilarating as walking the streets of an unfamiliar foreign country. Chef/owner Jose Garces and his chef de cuisine, Tim Spinner, turn out dishes that are festive while still retaining a sense of tradition. (One favorite: a new-world interpretation of a fish taco featuring quick-fried hamachi coated in crushed plantains and topped with zippy chipotle remoulade, rich avocado and refreshing house-pickled red cabbage.) You don't expect to be greeted with haute cuisine in such a frenetic atmosphere, but it's the mild discontinuity created by marrying food of this caliber with a buzzing environment that helps Distrito deliver such a refreshing slug of tonic. Open for lunch Mon.-Fri., 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.; open for dinner Mon., Sun., 5-10 p.m.; Tue.-Thu., 5-11 p.m.; Fri.-Sat., 5 p.m.-mid; brunch served Sat.-Sun., 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

had high hopes for this place, but was very disapointed. the portions were too small, even if we are sharing them,. its not fair that we get a piece each for the amount of money that we paid. the resturuant was ugly with annyoing music playing throughout our meal. good servie and nice employees, but the food isnt worth the money, better off at qdoba.

the food was good, but the service was the worst we ever had in our lives. the people at the table next to us got all 3 courses of their meal and their check before we even got our food. then when we complained the waiter had a worse attitude then he did to begin with. he brought the check and spilled our change all over he floor and didn't apologize or offer to help us pick it up. no manager ever came over to apologize either. and when we complained to the host on our way out he shrugged his shoulders and said "ok, thanks for coming." he really didn't care. it is really too bad since the food really was very good, but i will never eat in this restaurant again because we were treated so shamefully.

LOTS of MONEY for an average amount of food. Decor was a bit cafeteria and lots of college-aged people. A pitcher of margaritas was $50. Tapas is just another word for "lots of money for very little food."
