Local 44

44th and Spruce St.
215-222-BEER

Bar/Pub, West Philadelphia/University City

Brendan Hartranft and Leigh Maida, part of the team behind Memphis Taproom, overhauled the former Kelliann’s from floor studs to pressed-tin ceiling. The crowd here can get thick come evening, and it's easy to see why. There's little point in running down a list of names that will change from month to month, but know that 44’s beer selection (18 on tap, with two hand pumps) is in a league of its own. The food doesn't achieve the same heights, but the kitchen's reach is also more modest. Perfectly respectable burgers come with options ranging from double-smoked bacon to cabbage and jicama slaw. Hand-cut potato chips are close to perfection. The menu leans a bit too heavily on the deep fryer overall, but a decent roster of vegetarian dishes helps to make up for it.  Open daily, 11:30 a.m.-2 a.m.

  • Average entree under $10
  • Late-night dining
  • Vegetarian options
  • Liquor license
