Sandy Denny was 20 when she wrote "Who Knows Where The Time Goes." So was Nick Drake when he made Five Leaves Left. Certainly — as the U.K. press mentions incessantly in coverage of its Mercury-nominated darling — Laura Marling's lyrical, sophisticated folk belies her tender age, but what's more striking is how deftly it belies our own; how immediately the clear-voiced, troubled-mind laments and darkly rousing ballads on her wintry, elegiac, yet quietly vital sophomore outing I Speak Because I Can (Virgin) hearken back to the aforementioned standard-bearers of classical British folk.
